I don’t know about you, but throughout the years, I have played a lot of Collectable Cards Games. Everyone has heard of Pokemon, Yugioh, and Magic the Gathering, and while these are the most recognizable names, there are many more games out there. The problem with these other games is that they eventually end up OFP or OUT OF PRINT. The companies that print them decided to stop, and so the game essentially becomes dead. But sometimes a dead game isn’t dead—one such example Vampire: The Eternal Struggle.

A little History

Gamers might be more familiar with the RPG Vampire: The Masquerade. This RPG sets the players in the World of Darkness universe, where they explore the rich depths of vampire society trying to survive in a modern world. Vampire the Eternal Struggle or V:TES was developed in 1994 by Richard Garfield (creator of Magic the Gathering) as a card game set in that same world. The game was dropped in 1996, picked up in 2000  only to be cut again in 2010. that was when production and support finally ended… but it didn’t

Dedicated Fan Base

The game’s official player organization has kept this game running for ten years. The Elder Kindred Network oversees all official V:TES tournament play. They also create new expansions with cards as PDF files for players to print on there own. Crucial members of this group created Black Chantry Production and a license was granted to bring VTES back to print.

ITS ALIVE!

Early this June, Black Chantry has announced the return to print of Vampire the Eternal Struggle 5th Edition. This announcement coincides with Vampire the Masquerade 5th Edition that came out a few years prior. Games will be able to purchase a box set with five preconstructed decks, blood counters, and an updated rule book. The release date is Sept 2020 with a retail price of $95.00. This is a good deal considering this will give 5 players everything they need to play.

What is this Game?

This card game is meant to be played with a group of people. Players take control of an Ancient Vampire or Methuselah who is the head of a powerful vampire clan. They receive Victory points by draining the resources of other vampire houses and forcing them out of the game. Players do this by playing cards and summoning minions to attack players. They can only attack the player to their left which is their prey. But that also means they can fall prey to the player to their right. The game continues until one house is left standing, But its the player that has the most VP that wins. Players who are more familiar with Magic the Gathering and there version call Commander will find many similarities. Not surprising as both games share a creator.

Why does this Interest me?

Well, for one, it is a fun game. If you are a fan of MTG Commander and are a fan of Vampires, this is the game you should be playing. I also find the story enthralling. A game that should have joined the ranks of other dead games but never did. Now the game is well and truly back, and what you should be asking yourself is, “What made this game so special?” The only way to find out is to play if yourself.
