SAVAGE!!! A “Netflix” For Video Games??

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Microsoft has recently announced its plan for getting 2 billion gamers

around the world to subscribe to their new service.

In an interview with The Verge, a Microsoft Xbox team member released some information about the company working on a service that would function similarly to how Netflix functions… but for video games. The service would offer users access to games from a variety of developers, including Microsoft and other major platforms to stream any title available title on the market to the player’s device of choice. This means if you want to play Call of Duty Black Ops on your Nintendo DS XL, or if you want to play Animal Crossing on your Playstation; you will now be able to.
Kareem Choudhry stated in an interview, ” We’re looking at ways to make that content available to anyone no matter what device they’re on” and the goal is to bring together the 2 billion gamers in the world on to one platform.

This beautiful idea could prove difficult however. The video game industry has been a funneled market, where games are exclusively available on one console and can not be played anywhere else. Players are then either forced to choose which console to game on or purchase many of these expensive consoles to feed their gaming needs.
The idea of using the cloud, however, is presenting new opportunities in the gaming community. By storing games on the cloud, developers could technically stream any of their content out to PCs, mobile devices, and consoles. Microsoft currently operates on Azure Cloud Service, among several others, and the team at Microsoft fully beieve they can deliver the platform on which games can be delivered and streamed instantly.
It is unknown if whether or not Nintendo and Sony will hop on this idea. Nintendo has only recently started delivering games to platforms beyond its own consoles, but they are only doing so on iPhones and Android devices. These games are not the same as those released on their systems; they are games that are spinoffs of an original idea and are very, very different. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have never expressed an interest in bringing their exclusive games to to other consoles; so it may be a dream that is too far away still since they have been competitors for so long.
A streaming service could be successful without Nintendo and Sony’s help. The majority of games are developed by a third party developer. Adding Microsoft’s games to the lineup could ensure a relatively well-rounded lineup of titles.
On Monday, Amazon announced a new cloud service called GameOn, intended to reel in game developers with the option to add more features such as competitions in games, along with the ability to send giveaways through easy integration with its e-commerce marketplace. Since Amazon already has a cloud service in place, it may not even be Microsoft who follows through with their big announcement!
Here at Geek Impulse, we believe this idea to be  revolutionary. We would rather pay for a high end streaming service like this, instead of buying a new console every year just to be able to play the new game releases. We are also excited to be able to play retro games and games we loved from our childhood that we have difficulty finding. If this streaming service does come true, we will be the first to tell you all the details on this platform.

A Time Machine to the Past has Arrived! It’s Name is AtariBox

Reading Time: 2 minutes
This news comes with an 8-bit of nostalgia. Atari, if you can believe that, is coming out with a new gaming system. This is the first system in 20 years. This really comes as no surprise as we see older companies like Nintendo are coming our with miniature versions of the NES and SNES consoles.

Atari has announced in a newsletter on line that they are developing the Ataribox. They have been teasing for a while now that they will be announcing a new product at the 2018 E3 Gaming convention. The teasing has been enough to give retro gaming fans like myself super excited. As you can see from the photos, they reveal a system inspired by the classic Atari design, with a more elegant flow of ribbed lines and slightly raised back.

Taken from the Official Atari Facebook

“Our objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari,” wrote the Atari project team.

At the moment there are only two designs that Atari has announced and they are a sleek wooden model or a black and red version. There is still a lot of secrecy involved when it comes to details surrounding the project, but the team at Atari is promising that both editions will have HDMI and SD ports, along with four USB ports.

Are you as excited for this system release as we are here at Geek Impulse? Will you be attending E3 in hopes to catch a glimpse of this beauty in action? Let us know in the comments below Geek Impulse Fam, We love hearing from you.
