Dreamcast was the last console Sega has made. That was back in 1999. One of the great things about Sega though is that they allow 3rd party companies to reproduce modern-day versions of the Genesis and Master System—emulation-based which have not gone so well. Sega has managed to stay thriving by allowing games to be put on smartphones, and their strategy of compiling games for modern consoles have been a winning formula.

Analogue, created a hit recreation of Super Nintendo Entertainment System hardware built around a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). In doing so they were able to achieve maximum accuracy and an almost-perfect recreation of the original hardware. They are the ones who have created the new console.

In an email interview with Motherboard, the founder Christopher Taber said, “From the beginning, we wanted to design the ultimate Sega console for everything pre-Sega Saturn—the perfect way to explore Sega’s 8-bit and 16-bit eras.”

“We’re here to make Sega look, sound and play better than anyone has ever experienced,” he explained.

“It’s taken us eight years to cultivate an audience directly and be able to do this,” he added. “This has been the plan all along, but has only become possible from years of R&D, fine-tuning our development, and building a reputation with our user base.”

It actually looks really cool. Retro gaming seems to continue to be on the upswing. You had Atari recently release a modern version of their console for example. I might not buy it, but would really appreciate it as a gift. What are your thoughts on it?
