For Geomiq, Details are scarce, but the result is likely to be a bizarre journey deep into the uncanny valley that is robotics and the future.
A robotics company wants your face and they will pay you to have it. The mysterious company has an unusual proposition, but at least you make some money. The going rate at the moment is $130,000 in exchange for the right to your face. They will then put your face on all their humanoid robots. This is intriguing and we are not in any way suggesting or advocating for you to do this, but hey, if you decide to do some crime, you have got all kinds of built-in reasonable doubt set up.
According to Popular Mechanics, the company Geomiq, are not the ones behind the actual request. “A few weeks ago we were approached by a robotics company asking if we could help it with the finishing touches of a state-of-the-art humanoid robot it’s been working on,” the company wrote. “Details of the project are scarce due to a non-disclosure agreement we’ve signed with the designer and his investors, but this is what we do know.”
If someone who sends their headshot to firstname.lastname@example.org is chosen, they’ll be briefed with the details on exactly what it is they’re signing away. Odds are they’d be selling the commercial rights to their own face. “We know that this is an extremely unique request, and signing over the licenses to your face is potentially an extremely big decision,” the company wrote.
What they should do is get that similar technology that does those AI-generated portrait photos, so it doesn’t actually really look like anybody that probably exists. Just random-generate a face! Are you ready to submit your face to the company so it’s all over the place for all the world to see? Is there a celebrity or person from history you think should be chosen?
