Why We Love Lightsaber Dueling In France (And You Should, Too!)
If you have “Star Wars” fantasies, then France might be the place for you. The French Fencing Federation has officially recognized lightsaber dueling as a competitive sport. Now the ‘weapon’ gets the same status among foil, epee and sabre. Perhaps one day we will see it used in the Olympics like its more traditional versions.
One might ponder how this can be accepted. Is a Sith Lord behind this? With more expensive lightsabers, we can expect a chip being installed. According to the Associated Press, “a chip will be installed in their hilt that emits an electric rumble, they will also sound very similar to the films.” The bouts are three minutes long. The physical nature of the lightsaber was one of the reasons why the French were able to get behind this trend. Each club will be equipped with these lightsabers. There will even be lightsaber instructors to teach people how to use them.
The duels use a scoring system in which strikes to the head are worth five points; to the arms or legs, three points; or to the hands, one point. Winners are determined by the first to notch 15 points, or whoever is ahead after a three-minute round. Alternatively, if both competitors reach 10 points, the duel goes to sudden death, with the first to land a blow to the head or body becoming the winner.Washington Post/Des Bieler
“With young people today, it’s a real public health issue. They don’t do any sport and only exercise with their thumbs,” “It’s becoming difficult to [persuade them to] do a sport that has no connection with getting out of the sofa and playing with one’s thumbs. That is why we are trying to create a bond between our discipline and modern technologies, so participating in a sport feels natural.”Serge Aubailly Federation secretary general
