As of June 27, order your coffee with simple sign language at the new Starbucks store in Kunitachi in western Tokyo
Japan has become the home to many of the most beautifully designed Starbucks. One of the most recent one was designed inside of a greenhouse. On June 27, Japan opened another unique store. A place where customers can communicate with staff using sign language. Nonowa Kunitachi store is the first of its kind in Japan to implement sign language. It also will be only the fifth store work-wide.
Starbucks’ dedication to building a workplace where “handicapped people will shine” is one of the many reasons why the coffeehouse chain has such a big following in Japan.
According to The Japan Times, 19 of the store’s 25 employees are hearing impaired. If you’re not well versed in sign language, don’t worry – you can challenge yourself and try ordering your latte with the help of the simple sign language instructions on the wall. Writing down or just pointing at the drink of your choice would do just fine as well.
To prevent the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus, the store will only provide its menu as takeout for now, and you’ll need to book to get in. Make an online reservation here (the link will be accessible from 9am on June 27), or grab a ticket directly at the store.
When you walk into the store you can see Beautiful artwork by Kado Hidehiko, an artist born to deaf parents who began drawing from an early age to express feelings that can not be conveyed through spoken language or sign language.
“I want everyone, people with or without hearing disability, to enjoy our coffee casually,” Eri Otsuka, who engaged in the opening of the new store, said in sign language during an online press conference.
