Joshua Sexton (Luxury_Geek) – Q: How did you get the part of Roche in FF7R?

Austin Matthews – A: Same as with most other named voice roles, I auditioned for it! I can’t say much else about that process other than I kinda pieced together what I was auditioning for pretty quickly and had a very difficult time with my usual “send and forget” mentality haha. I was thrilled when my agent called to tell me I booked it, and after she hung up I screamed “[EXPLETIVE DELETED] yeah!” and cried with joy into my pillow for half an hour.

JS: Is there anything new about this character that you think fans will enjoy?

AM: I can’t say a lot without spoiling it, but Roche is a kind of character that we really haven’t seen in FF7 before. I will say that he is a very fun character, and I think fans both new and old will appreciate what he brings to the table. Other than that, my lips are sealed until I play it myself. No spoilers!! I wanna go in as blindly as I can and I hope you can, too.

JS: How much creative freedom did you have with the character?

AM: Not as much as I would with a pre-lay (recorded before picture) character. This was all dubbed so I obviously couldn’t stray too far from the lovely performance of Miyake-san, but I think I still managed to make it my own as much as possible.

JS: Do you yourself have a high quality recording studio at home?

AM: I do! We all kind of have to now, especially with everything going on with Covid-19

JS: How has work been since this pandemic?

AM: It’s been interesting to say the least! I’m not sure exactly how much I’m at liberty to say, but I’m working from home exclusively at the moment (which is fine because I have done that for 11 years now, but at the same time, I really miss going into studios).

JS: How do you handle stress and pressure?

AM: I sure handle it, alright! (I don’t). I generally try to relax and do stuff I enjoy. Honestly, voice over helps a lot with that. This job makes me very happy and I get to let out a lot of frustration in the booth. Roche was easily the most fun character I’ve played, solo, so I got to have a delightful time with him. Every time I went in for Roche, I knew I was gonna smile for a few hours. Stress melts awaaaaay.

JS: Why did you want a career as a voice actor?

AM: Because I’d been having a blast with it as a hobby, and I realized that I could have fun AND make money off of it??? Are you kidding, like that’s the best deal ever???

JS: What are your career goals?

AM: Keep on bookin,’ keep on reachin’ higher, keep on makin’ people smile.

JS: What can we expect next from you?

AM: I wish I could say! There’s a lot of stuff I wanna talk about, but NDA’s are a thing and lawyers are SCARY!! What can I even talk about?? Uhhhh. Obviously play FF7R when it releases (April 10th), because DUH, you’re gonna play FF7R because HECK YEAH FF7R!! Oh oh, play Obey Me! I play a TALKING DOG in that one! That drops April 21! And also check out my radio play pilot, Megaton Girl. We’re working on episode 1 proper and I think that we’ve got something special on our hands. Other than that! You’ll find out as soon as I’m able to talk about it! Thanks for having me!
