At this time it is being reported by NHK that out of the 70 people working at the time, 33 have unfortunately died. At Geek Impulse we want to say that our hearts go out to the victims and their families.
Kyoto Animation has also decided to cancel the production of its planned Free! 2020 Summer anime theatrical feature. The new installment in the company’s popular handsome swim team boys franchise was scheduled for release next year, and word of its cancellation was made through the official twitter account.
President of Kyoto Animation, Hideaki Hatta, Told NHK, “They were addressed to our office and sales department and told us to “die”.”
Mainichi has also reported that the man in question poured gasoline on the building and on people inside before being apprehended. NHK is reporting multiple fatalities on the scene, while Mainichi is only reporting a single casualty, reflecting the severity and fluid nature of the situation. Kyoto Newspaper has reported that some victims ran outside, covered in flames.
After lighting the fire, the arsonist, a 41-year-old man whose name has not yet been released, ran from the scene but was taken into custody by police before he could flee far. A number of bladed instruments were also found at the scene of the fire, though investigators have not yet confirmed whether they belonged to the arsonist or not.
